Publisher's Synopsis

This is the oral history recounting the remarkable journey of Qi Shu Fang, a renowned Peking Opera singer, and her husband in America. In 1988, the Qis initially arrived in the U.S. to visit friends, but fate had other plans when they were persuaded to showcase their talents in a performance.

The reception was so overwhelmingly positive that the Qis, inspired by the warm embrace of the American audience, made the pivotal choice to remain in the United States. This decision, however, subjected them to harsh criticism from some in China who questioned their departure.

In hindsight, their resolve to stay and share the exquisite artistry of Peking Opera with the American people proved to be a fortuitous decision. In 2001, Qi Shu Fang was honored with the National Heritage Fellowship, the highest accolade for traditional arts in the United States.

Today, the legacy of Peking Opera, ignited by the Qis' unwavering commitment, continues to thrive and endure on American soil.
