Best known as a garrison town with its fortifications and its citadel, the city of Quebec was first colonized and then conquered by sea. The last deep-water port on the St. Lawrence and a hub for maritime commerce, the history of Quebec is closely linked to the sea.

However, it was not before three centuries after the founding of the city that a permanent naval presence was established there with the creation of a half company of the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1923. This unit, which became Her Majesty's Canadian Ship MONTCALM, is still present there, a hundred years later.

Other naval units have appeared over the years. Some have disappeared while those who remain continue to perpetuate this naval presence in the Old Capital.

This work relates the history of these various naval units established in Quebec over the last hundred years.
