Following a broken romance and a bout of pneumonia, Miss Chance Lester arrives in Yorkshire to recuperate at the home of her uncle, Dr Tobias Lester. Betsy, the cook, and Thomas, the coachman, welcome Chance, but she is received with hostility by her uncle's housekeeper, Miss Bostide, and the hunchbacked little maid Eva. During her stay, Chance meets and falls in love with Dr Edward Bradle, but their relationship provokes a number of attempts on Chance's life.
