Publisher's Synopsis
The first edition of this book was published in 1986 as a reference work for bacteriologists and plant pathologists. The second edition represents an update encompassing the full range of information on nomenclature, synonymy, characteristics, type cultures, host ranges, symptoms and geographical distribution for known plant pathogenic bacteria. In recent years the taxonomy of these bacteria has been revised, largely as a result of the increasing use of molecular and chemosystematic techniques. The insight these methods have provided into bacterial evolution and classification has had a major impact on the circumscription of Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas and the phytopathogenic taxa within the family Enterobacteriaceae.;Details of new and revised taxa are included alongside updated sections giving details of molecular, biochemical, physiological, geographical and host information. A major edition is the inclusion of sections covering the mycoplasma-like organisms (MLOs). The bulk of the book consists of an alphabetical arrangement of well over 2000 names of bacteria for which plant pathogenicity has been claimed. The comprehensive host-pathogen index has been updated to reflect the increasing host range of certain known taxa as well as details on new and emerging pathogens. In addition the bibliography section has been altered to give full details of all cited references.
