Lady Sale travelled the world accompanying her British Army officer husband, Sir Robert Henry Sale, on his numerous postings. During the First Anglo-Afghan War she was kidnapped with many other women, children and soldiers and detained for nine months. The following year (1843) she published this journal detailing her own experiences of the ordeal and those of her fellow captives.
