The protagonist, Norman Leslie, is a young Scottish man who joins the army of King James III to fight against the English. However, he is captured by the English and imprisoned in France. There, he meets a monk named Anselm who helps him escape and they embark on a journey back to Scotland. Along the way, they encounter various challenges and adventures, including battles, romance, and treachery. The novel is based on the real-life story of a Scottish soldier named Norman Leslie who fought in the Battle of Baug�����.
