As to others, many alterations and additions have been made, when fupported by original writings and genuine billory. Thefe are the only vouchers that are to be depended on, and not oral tradition, which is uncertain among any peo ple, but is fo in an uncommon degree, if they are unfettled, turbulent, and illiterate.
