New evidence showed while they were trying to work out why AJ wasn't affected by the artifact, mainly, AJ was half fae. A secret her mother kept from her having bound her powers when she was a baby.When her parents reneged on a deal they made with a powerful fae, to use the artifact that would save her mother's life, it was AJ who would pay the penalty. Failing to return the artifact meant that AJ would be given as penance for not complying to the contract.
