Australia's main grain belt extends from central Queensland in the north down through central New South Wales and on south to western Victoria and lower South Australia. A smaller belt runs through the southwest of Western Australia (fig. The main grain belt lies in an area receiving about 10 to 20 inches of rainfall per year. In the southern part of Australia, where reliable rains occur during winter, the winter-growing cereals - predominate. In central Queens land, rains occur during summer, so the summer crops, especially sorghum, predominate. In southern Queensland and northern New South Wales, there is some overlap of summer and winter rains, and both summer and winter crops may be grown. Winter crops are planted in the fall, generally April through June, and harvested in early summer, November through December. Sorghum is planted during spring or early summer (september to January) and harvested in April through June.
To alleviate soil depletion and erosion, the land must be rotated between cr0ps and pasture. Hence, most grain producers carry livestock for grazing the pasture.
