This memoir takes readers to what everyday life was like for a young girl growing up in and around Le Mans, France.
Annette reflects on family, friends, places, customs, and traditions; all of which provide a rich context for what occurs beginning in May, 1940 when German troops crush France in a lightning attack. Annette begins her story as a young girl of eight. She details how her early carefree life is upended by the arrival of German troops and recalls how the occupation shaped her life and the life of her family. The emotions of love, hate, fear, trust, and faith provide a thread that weaves stories of the occupation together while helping one to understand the heart, mind, and soul of a young French girl during this era. Upon the landing of Allied troops in Normandy and the western drive of Patton through Le Mans, life for Annette and her family is altered forever by the chance meeting of an American soldier.
