When Lorimer Hall returns to the town of Clear Creek, everything has changed. His father and his friend Budd Ewing are both dead, and nobody wants to know him. Lorimer decides to move on, but with it looking as if Glenn Harlow, Budd's killer, might get lynched, he is persuaded to accept the task of escorting him to jail. Glenn claims he's an innocent man.
