The following Lectures were prepared at the invita tion of the honored Professors in the Theological Semi nary at Princeton, New Jersey, to be delivered on what is there known as the L. P. Stone Foundation. They were subsequently delivered before the Lowell Institute in Boston; and three of them, the third, fourth, and seventh, have since been read at the Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore.
