Publisher's Synopsis
In 1898, San Francisco is jammed with gold-seekers heading for Alaska. At her bank, Melinda McCrea withdraws the last of her funds to pay for next semester's teacher training. While making her way through the crowd at the waterfront, she is slammed to the ground. Someone steals her money. Now her schooling will have to wait.
With Evan, her eight-year-old ward, she returns to Monte Cristo in Washington state, where she'd left her fiancé, Evan's uncle Quin. The thief also took an unread letter from Quin, so she doesn't know he's taken a new job as a newspaper reporter. His assignment? To imbed himself among the gold rush hopefuls crossing Alaska's dangerous Valdez Glacier and send back a record of their experiences.Meanwhile, Melinda has a terrifying dream of Quin in mortal danger. She heads to Alaska to find and warn him, and discovers Evan has stowed away on the same boat.
On the way north, the ship nearly founders in the very place she'd dreamed about. She is surer than ever that she must find Quin, but miles of wilderness lie between them. Can she and Evan catch up with Quin in time to warn him? Or is there greater danger in the unanticipated outcome?
Join Melinda, Quin and Evan as they discover there is something that is "Better than Gold."
