Publisher's Synopsis
Ryokan wrote poetry in Japanese, and, as was customary of Buddhist priests, in Chinese. The first section of the book is a selection of Ryokan's Chinese or Kanshi poems. In 1826, when he was 68, Ryokan became friends with Teishin, a Buddhist nun, forty years his junior. The two exchanged numerous poems, creating a unique poetic dialogue which is collected here in the second section of the book. This collection was compiled by Teishin under this title after Ryokan's death.
