Set in California in the 1920s during a wave of anti-Japanese feeling, this novel tells the story of Spot, and Matsuo, the scion of a noble house. Set on by thugs they are rent asunder and Matsuo returns to Japan. As war with America looms, the novel traces the activities of Matsuo's family.
