Walter Smith was born during the First World War in West Bromwich. His parents were rooted in this community and Walter lived there himself for many years. His parents were actively and deeply committed to the socialist cause and had been for nearly twenty years by the time of Walter's birth. Many visitors to the household were prominent in the Black Country socialist cause and the family knew others with a national reputation.
