Publisher's Synopsis

This captivating memoir covers life in Berlin before, during, and after WWII. We witness the remarkable spirit of a young woman as she participates in Germany's painful recovery, as she emigrates to America and meets the man who would become her husband, and as she finds a new place to call home in what would later become California's Silicon Valley. Born in Berlin into a comfortable middle-class family in 1926, Ursula (Uschi) lived through Germany's depression and recovery to World War II's utter defeat and destruction during during the Nazi years. Shortly after the blockade and airlift of West Berlin in 1948/1949, she was able to immigrate to the USA. She tells of her life in her new country, of marriage and family and the big adventure of moving from New York to California in search of a new life. She ends this memoir in 1961, when she is thirty-five years old. She feels that it marks the end of her immigrant years and the beginning of joining her friends and neighbors in their everyday pursuits and joys.
