Publisher's Synopsis

A richly illustrated look at Chiharu Shiota's work, this publication offers a poetic exploration of the artist's monumental site-specific installations and her most significant shows, such as the 56th Venice Biennale. Her increasingly ambitious installations, which are found in museums worldwide, have become her signature; one by one, they build a complex body of work that questions our notions of existence and transcendence. Born in 1972 in Osaka, Japan, Chiharu Shiota has been living and working in Berlin since 1997. Grappling with fundamental human concerns such as life, death, and relationships, Shiota explores human existence across various dimensions by creating an existence in the absence. This can be found in her large-scale thread installations, which include a variety of common objects and external memorabilia, or through her drawings, sculptures, photography, and videos. Using woven yarn, the artist combines performance, body art, and installations in a process that places the body at its center. Her protean artistic approach plays with the notions of temporality, movement, and dreams, and demands a dual engagement from the viewer, both physical and emotional.
