Trollope (1815-82) was an English novelist of the Victorian era whose best-known works include the series known collectively as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. His fiction also covered political, social and gender issues, and other topical matters. This short story, reprinted from an illustrated American edition of 1894, was earlier included in Trollope's 1882 collection of five stories entitled Why Frau Frohmann Raised Her Prices.
