Publisher's Synopsis

Pneumothorax is a condition in which air enters the pleural cavity (the space between the lung and chest wall) - usually from the lung. It probably, is most often seen after chest injury and can cause rapid deterioration in the patient's condition and, if not treated, lead to death. It is a condition which may not be recognized as contributing to the deterioration of a patient's condition. It has been stated in a leading medical journal, that pneumothorax is one of the worst handled medical or surgical emergencies.;"Closed Pneumothorax" deals with a subject being seen increasingly often in civilian life following car accidents and, of course, in all theatres of war. It is poorly considered in most general textbooks of medicine and surgery.;Professor Thompson sets out a new classification of the subject and presents a new explanation of the mechanism of production of a pneumothorax. He introduces a new name for one of the common associated clinical conditions which may follow a pneumothorax.;The author also sets out in detail, the management of chest drainage for pneumothorax and its associated complicating conditions such as fluid and/or blood in the chest cavity.
