IN accordance with the terms of my contract with the Imperial Japanese Government, it has been my pleasure to give instruction in Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene to five successive classes of English-speaking Japanese students. Experience with students whose knowledge of English had been wholly acquired in the day-schools of the cities 'of the Empire led me to depend in Anatomy less and less upon the text-book and more and more upon dissections before the class, and upon demonstrations from an active coolie and from microscopic preparations. By this method it was found that the students acquired a more definite, usefiil, and retentive knowledge of the form, color, position, and relations of the parts and organs than from the text-book used in connection with English and American charts. Also by demonstrations on the coolie and the students many physiological facts were made manifest. As the students experienced great difficulty in under standing the bearing of the very general statements in the sections of the text-books devoted to Hygiene, recourse was had to talks, giving concise and specific statements on the topics of air, water, ventilation, clothing, foods, etc. Furthermore, the question of Alcoholics, Tobacco, Opium, etc., had for them an intense interest, because of certain political and social problems of the day in the Far East. Their questions indicated a desire for unbiassed, definite, well-authenticated information concerning the effects of the use and abuse of stimulants and narcotics. As the college authorities were unable to procure a text-book containing such information, talks and lectures were introduced.
