Publisher's Synopsis
This volume gathers papers in English, Spanish and French on the theme of death, originally presented at the second International Conference of Transition Archaeology, held in 2013 at the University of Évora. The contributions cover periods from the Palaeolithic to the medieval, touch on regions from the Orkneys to North Africa, with a focus on the Atlantic coast of Europe, and consider a range of topics relating to funerary ritual, art and burial practices, from megalithic tombs to the necropoleis and cemeteries of the early historical periods. They are united by the concept of death as transition, and a consideration of the ways in which different cultures have marked a conscious separation between the world of the living and the world of the dead.
