Publisher's Synopsis
Sheldon (1862-1945) was an American author of novels, poems and short stories whose published work consisted of seven novels, around 200 short stories, more than 1,000 poems and many articles on scientific and sociological subjects. She was a suffrage activist and opposed prohibition. She spent two years at the Women's Medical College of the New York Infirmary, matriculating in 1882, and served in several hospitals, gaining experience by helping the physicians in a variety of ways. However, after six years of the study and practice of medicine she was obliged to abandon it on health grounds. From an early age she had written verse and by her twenties her work was being published, primarily in the columns of the New York Mercury. In time her humorous verses had appeared in nearly every magazine and paper of prominence in the US. She also contributed a number of non fiction articles which demonstrated her method of careful investigation and capacity for profound thought. This novel, subtitled A Story of Sinful Love, was first published in 1892 and includes a frontispiece and photographic portrait of the author.
