Publisher's Synopsis
When Jon and Ryan skive off school, an excursion in a stolen rowing boat ends in disaster. The boat is swept away by the current and overturns, breaking Ryan's arm. Ryan can't scale the steep cliffs on either side of the canal one-handed, and gets stuck on a ledge halfway up. Jon sets off to seek help, but when he arrives home he is too scared to tell his mother what he has done. The longer he pretends that nothing has happened, the easier it is to believe that it was all just a bad dream. Thenthe police are informed that Ryan is missing and Jon, caught in a web of lies, doesn't know what to do. Eventually he knows that he must rescue Ryan himself and face the consequences.
