This book is about Harry, a fascinating and kind man who was like a father to me. Harry used to often say, -I was born lucky. I've been lucky all my life- and in many ways this unique man lived a charmed existence. Forced into the German army at the age of 18, Harry was one of just 3 boys in his class who survived the war, the other 33 dying at Stalingrad. Harry was unusual in that he fought for both the German and British armies in World War II and somehow, against all the odds he came through it alive. But his luck finally ran out when he was diagnosed with dementia in 2013, a disease that our society is poorly prepared for. Had I known then what I know now about dementia, that burden would have been so much lighter to carry and so I hope that Harry's story will help others who are caring for a loved one too.
