Publisher's Synopsis
You want to talk about going through hell and coming out the other side, then look no further than Denise. Sure, she was born into a post-apocalyptic world right before the crash, where soldiers tried to kill you and zombies tried to eat you, but that was the least of her worries. Learning to survive in a world where 90 percent of the population wanted you dead didn't seem so daunting once Denise had her run in with Doc Gutierrez and his side kick daughter, Yasenia. But let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet. Denise started out in a world where the newspapers were underground, families bolted metal doors shut at night to keep the zombies out, and eating out of a tin can to candle light was considered a good hearty meal. It was all she ever knew, but it didn't stop her curiosity, and she was constantly getting in trouble for sneaking out into the city alone to spend hours sitting in the old boarded up city library looking at pictures of Hollywood movie stars and of a world she didn't recognize. All that changed for her when she came home one afternoon and found that a group of ravagers, unfriendly blood thirsty werewolves, had made her parents into an afternoon snack. That's when she lost it, grabbing anything she could find and fashioning it into what she liked to call, "Zombie Snipers." They were really just devices that let her get her aggression out on the undead by throwing a spear into their heads, and laughing as they rolled across the ground. It wasn't often she came across any humans, especially since they seemed to all had disappeared when the last can of the Z-Virus crashed into Gold City, pretty much taking out anyone not immune to the virus. So, when she happened to come upon Yasenia with her strange outfit and sweet smile, Denise hadn't really thought to be on the defense. Well, that was a big mistake. Before she knew it, they had balled her tiny body up, shoved her in the back of a van, and driven off to some mad scientist's lab. The last thing she remembered there was being injected with some kind of blue serum. Everything else was pretty much a blur, at least until TJ showed up. Denise remembered seeing TJ outside the gates late at night, staring up at her window. Sometimes he was in human form and sometimes in wolf form, but she always could tell it was him by his striking eyes. On her last day in the labs, she remembered sensing him in the compound, but Yasenia had come in and given her a sedative, which never actually worked, and drug her off to the Doctor's lair. Next thing she knew, Doctor G was standing over her with a syringe of death and TJ was strung up for Yasenia to play with. Well, Denise figured she wasn't ready to die so she broke free, killed both the doc and Yasenia, and freed TJ, staring at his strange eyes and uncanny ability to change into a wolf. But he wasn't a ravager, he was kind, and not bloodthirsty. It was strange. After that, she took off back into the city, where she climbed into some of the duct work in one of the old buildings and hid from the world. Her body was different now, stronger, faster, and she didn't seem to need food at all. Her eyes had changed from hazel to ice blue just like the zombies that roamed the city, except she was alive, and considerably better looking having skin still attached to her face. Once her mind wasn't so blurry anymore, Denise emerged again, this time seeing the world in a whole new light. She could do things, powerful things and part of her was frightened by the change. She no longer ran from the zombies as she realized early on she could now control them.
