Publisher's Synopsis

This book provides exercises for levels 4-10 of National Curriculum Attainment Targets: the variety of life and five human influences on the earth. The skills and processes required to carry out these investigations correspond to Attainment Target 1, Exploration of Science.;The book meets the practical requirements for all GCSE Biology syllabuses, with the aims of each investigation cross-referenced to the relevant attainment targets of the National Curriculum.;The investigations in this book are based on ten habitats which are likely to occur around schools. Most investigations are short and can be carried out in groups with a minimum of equipment.;The photocopiable sheets for pupils include an introduction to the environment followed by the techniques used and procedure. The corresponding teacher's notes give cross-referencing of the aims of each investigation to the relevant Attainment Targets and a planning and management strategy with guidance for assessment.;The arrangement of each chapter follows a standard pattern. It begins with a brief introduction to a particular habitat with emphasis on its possibilities for teaching and learning. This is followed by two or more separate but related investigations accompanied by teacher's notes and pupils' investigations.;At the end of each chapter there are follow-up investigations. Their purpose is to broaden the scope of the enquiries by posing slightly more testing problems suitable for the abler students.
