"On November 9, 1946, Margaret Rosell Hawkins and Sarah Strickland Scott invited seven of their friends to join them in organizing a new type of inter-city club, initially called the Philadelphia Club. They envisioned a network of many inter-city clubs along the eastern seaboard with a threefold aim- help those who are less fortunate, raise the cultural level of black people, and enjoy the company of friends.
