In 1936, Caspar, a British surrealist artist, falls in love with a typist called Caroline, who disappears when he tries to get too close to her, and after an orgy that ends in a suicide he lands in a mental institution, where he remains until the middle of the London blitz, but he continues to be obssessed by the vanished Caroline.
