Publisher's Synopsis

Fanshawe is a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, first published in 1828. The story follows the life of a young man named Fanshawe, who is a student at Harvard University. Fanshawe is a talented poet and scholar, but he is also haunted by a tragic event from his past. He falls in love with a young woman named Ellen Langton, but their relationship is complicated by the arrival of a mysterious stranger named Edward Walcott. As Fanshawe struggles to come to terms with his past and his feelings for Ellen, he becomes embroiled in a web of secrets and lies that threaten to destroy everything he holds dear. The novel explores themes of love, loss, betrayal, and redemption, and is considered a precursor to Hawthorne's later, more famous works such as The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables.Doctor Melmoth, at the time when he is to be intro- duced to the reader, had borne the matrimonial yoke (and in his case it was no light burthen) nearly twenty years. The blessing of children, however, had been de- nied him, -- a circumstance which he was accustomed to consider as one of the sorest trials that chequered his path way; for he was a man of a kind and affectionate heart, that was continually seeking objects to rest itself upon. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
