Arriving at their new rural home, five siblings - Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane and the Lamb - set to exploring the surrounding countryside. Whilst digging in the gravel-pit, they unearth the most curious creature: a Psammead, an ancient (and rather testy) Sand-fairy, with the power to grant wishes. Between them, the children have a sizeable list of requests - remarkable beauty, vast riches, the ability to fly. But, as everyone knows, wishes always harbour a sting in the tail - and the five must face up to and deal with the unforeseen and highly alarming consequences of their desires...
