For centuries, God promised to establish a new relationship with humanity that would end our estrangement from him. We see the first fulfillment of that promise in the unique relationship God established with the Jewish nation, but it soon became encumbered with ritualism and legalism. Then Jesus Christ established a new covenant between God and humanity, inviting us to become members of the divine family through faith in him. This new community of faith, the church, fulfills God's promise to live among us and transform us into the kind of people we were created to be.
