Publisher's Synopsis
In his cave, the Witch-King mused on the randomness that might again disrupt his plans. He couldn't rely on waiting. His influence, his existence, had always remained unsuspected, but now Elaine knew about him and was intent on his destruction. Unlikely to succeed, he couldn't entirely dismiss her, especially as she, the only other magician who understood the deeper layers of magic, was bonded to Johan who had yet to realise his own power. The Witch-King would have to rely on the new Emperor to stop them - permanently on the brink between sanity and madness, a man easily steered to unwittingly prepare the way for the Witch-King's return. Meanwhile Elaine, Dread, Daria and Johan slowly made their way towards Ida and the catacombs where Elaine was sure the lich was hiding.
