Publisher's Synopsis
Each of us eventually reaches a moment when we begin to contemplate the unknown depths of existence. Human beings, unique creatures, consciously acknowledge their limitations and become subjects of their own reflections on death. Death is considered an inseparable conclusion to life, its ultimate point. Funerals and memorial ceremonies are always filled with tragedy and sorrow due to the loss of loved ones. However, for relatives, this is the last opportunity to pay homage to the deceased.
The traditional funeral and memorial rituals of Ukrainians impress with their uniqueness and archaic nature, highlighting the ethnic identity and ancient roots of folk culture. Many of these archaisms can be observed in the customs of Hutsuls, Boykos, Lemkos, as well as in the traditions of the Pokutians. Observing these traditions is extremely important for understanding Ukrainian and, more broadly, Slavic antiquities. Folk funeral rites encompass pre-funeral, funeral, and post-funeral stages, incorporating memorial customs and rituals. An integral part is also the traditional beliefs and conceptions regarding death, the soul, and life after death.
