Publisher's Synopsis
This is a retelling, for contemporary Western readers, of a series of encounters with Ramakrishna who was known as "Great Swan". Ramakrishna was a Hindu priest, who had studied a variety of religious systems and came to see the universal truth revealed in them all. He wrote no books and taught no formal philosophy, but his teachings, transmitted in informal conversations, were carefully recorded by a disciple, Mahendra Gupta and later appeared in book form as "The Gospel of Ramakrishna". This book draws closely on "The Gospel" as well as other "eyewitness" accounts of Ramakrishna's teachings to produce a narrative that is not only a portrait of a great spiritual leader, but also a guide to the deeper understanding of religion and the path of mysticism.
