Publisher's Synopsis
This book is dedicated to Uffe Ravnskov, MD, in recognition of his groundbreaking and prodigious contributions to the debate over the conventional wisdom that cholesterol and fat are the main causes of coronary heart disease and that statins are generally safe and cardioprotective.
No research has shown that reducing fat lowers coronary morbidity or mortality, as will be seen.
More importantly, the government's guidelines enforcing low-fat diets are probably the root of the rising obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemics.
The multitude of major statin-related adverse health consequences that have been downplayed or overlooked in reports of studies sponsored by pharmaceutical companies are detailed in several chapters.
Among them is encouraging the growth of coronary atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure. Plaque buildup in the arteries supplying the heart with oxygen-rich blood is a defining feature of coronary artery disease. If plaque in the arteries is not removed, it might narrow or block the arteries and result in a heart attack. Shortness of breath and soreness in the chest are frequent symptoms. Depending on your situation, treatments may entail dietary changes, medications that target your risk factors, and/or surgery.
