Publisher's Synopsis
A selection of essays on nineteenth-century post-Romantic German literature and literary history originally published in various places over the past twenty years. Topics include: the Bildungs- roman, Eduard Moerike, Heinrich Heine, Ludolf Wienbarg, Berthold Auerbach, Gustav Freytag, German novels on America, Wilhelm Raabe, and the evaluation of literature. Several of the essays have been revised or expanded and in some cases they have been supplied with retrospective postscripts to bring them up to date.
