Publisher's Synopsis

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was a leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era.

In a Glass Darkly (1872) is a collection of five stories of the macabre, presented as selections from the posthumous papers of the fictional occult detective Dr. Martin Hesselius. The last of these, the novella "Carmilla," is not only Le Fanu's most famous work, but is a significant landmark in the development of vampire fiction. In particular, it was a major influence on Bram Stoker's later Dracula. "Carmilla" is frequently published on its own and has been repeatedly adapted to film, opera, theater, television, and even as a web series.

This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).
