James Plumtre was an evangelical clergyman and Cambridge don who, between the ages of 19 and 29, made eight tours of Britain to areas such as North Wales, the Peak, Scotland and the West Riding of Yorkshire. He kept meticulous accounts of these journeys which have never been published before. Though never attaining the readability of a great diarist such as Cobbett or Pepys, at their best these journals rival Kilvert for their humour, period charm and for the insights they provide into public and private life at the end of the 18th century.
