Publisher's Synopsis
Langston Hughes discovered Harlem when he arrived in New York City to go to college. In Harlem, the area where African Americans lived, he found a place he belonged to. He drew inspiration for his poetry from the jazz music he heard and from other African American writers and artists living and working there. Hughes travelled all over the world, writing poetry and articles and speaking out about the problems between the races. But he always returned to Harlem, where he could renew his spirit and where he found family and a home.
