Publisher's Synopsis
This is a new version of the classic book of love which offers a revised text which has referred back to the original Sanskrit, photographic illustrations from Indian art and drawings of old images and wood carvings interwoven with the text.;In his introduction, Mulk Raj Anand points out that Vatsayana "made love holy" and it is not therefore appropriate to define the "Kama Sutra" as erotic, as its reputation has suggested, but rather to categorize it as a vivid depiction of that obsessive, introvert relationship called love, possessing the minds and bodies of the human couple in shared passion.;The paintings and works of art featured in the book have been collected over a period of 30 years by the photographer, Lance Dane, who has photographed wayside shrines, obscure temples and private collections of valuable antiques. The book also contains a history of the printing of the Kama Sutra along with notes, a glossary of Sanskrit terms and a list of flora mentioned in the original Sanskrit text.;The editor is a well-known Indian art-historian and critic and has written "The Hindu View of Art" and "Persian Painting". He is currently a Visiting Professor in five universities in various parts of the world. The book was designed by Dolly Sahiar.
