Publisher's Synopsis

The book was inspired by a seminar held in Florence, focused on the theme of globalization, with particular attention to our economic policy and international relations. The contributions by Piero Barucci, Christian Rocca, Giorgio Rebuffa, Michele Bagella, Rosario Altieri, Cosimo Risi, Italico Santoro, Lilia Alberghina, Alia K. Nardini are preceded by a reflection by Giovanni Spadolini and a premise by Cosimo Ceccuti, and introduced by Giovanni Agnelli and Stefano Folli. "One can say that the evolution of democracies in the post-war is fostered and connected with the evolution of a scenario based on the western economic model. There we can find the foundations of today's globalized world, where the growing political fragmentation, the threats of fundamentalism, the riots so often with no solution, like it happens in the Arab world, point out that the dangers of destabilization are increasing. Today it comes to analyzing the political and diplomatic ways through which the 'open world' can be stabilized without regressing. And it is a hard task indeed, for the American superpower, for medium-sized European powers facing the euro crisis, for new emerging giants of Asia and of the former Third World. Today's conference wants to give a specific and original contribution to the understanding of a phenomenon so complex and so crucial for our destinies" (from the Introduction by Stefano Folli).
