There also lived in the house Anna's two surviving brothers, Walter and Lindley. Walter was a year older than Anna, and had long left school; it was intended that he should succeed his father in the business. Lindley was the little boy who used to stand gaping on the station platform, watching the people that sped away from Haxteth into real life, with money in their pockets, and wishing hard that he were going too. His brother and Sister were so much older than himself, and in so many ways different from him, that Lindley was left a good deal alone.
