Maggie doesn't trust men. Her father died before she learned how to walk, and her step-father never particularly cared if she was around or not; as long as she didn't get in his way. So Maggie has her heart set on becoming a school teacher: determined to never marry, but to fill her life showering all her love on her students. Then one day Jake McCormick arrives on the scene. Already adoring his young son, she nevertheless endeavors to resist the ambiguous advances of the father. After his disastrous first marriage, Jake vowed to never trust another woman. Leaving his young son with his parents to raise he pursued his dream of leading wagon trains west to Oregon. But on one return home he finds he is sorely tempted by a redheaded pixie, Maggie Davis. And he finds himself unexpectedly drawn to her against his better judgment. Both Jake and Maggie find their worlds turned upside down as they struggle to uncover the true meaning of love as God has designed it. Only then will they be able to embrace the fulfillment of love with each other.
