Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Memoirs of the Geological Survey, England and Wales: On the Thicknesses of Strata in the Counties of England and Wales, Exclusive of Rocks Older Than the Permian

That rapid variations would have to be recorded in the sub divisions oi the Wealden was anticipated. Not only do the sand and clay-beds graduate one into the other, but the subdivisions shown upon the Geological Survey Map all, more or less, have a lenticular form. Of the Oolitic subdivisions also few lend them selves to a precise lithological definition.

The general question of correlation has not been touched. It would be out of place for example to enquire what strata in the Southern Counties correspond in age to the Tealby and Speeton Beds of the North. The practical purpose is served by record ing the dimensions of each in their respective districts.
