Publisher's Synopsis

As Flora Bennet, now twenty-one, prepares for a ball held by the parents of her fiance, Justin Kilcoyne, she's startled to see in the mirror a young man in army uniform standing behind her. Vaguely recognising him, and believing him to be a friend of Justin's come to hurry her along, she dismisses the incident, but is alarmed to learn afterwards that no such man had entered the house, or been seen by anyone else.
As the weeks pass, Flora sees the young man again on several occasions, and when she eventually comes to the frightening realisation that he is the ghost of her long-dead brother, Miles, she begins to withdraw into a confused, unbalanced state - much to the concern of her friends and family. Gradually, she is drawn back into a world she feared so much as a child - a world which caused her to lose her beloved brother, and a world which threatens to destroy her life all over again.
