The Jukumani Indians of Northern Potosí, Bolivia, supplement subsistence farming with the mining of antimony for export, which they undertook in response to ecological degradation, population pressure, and declining agricultural yields. In this study, Ricardo Godoy examines why the Jukumanis found it necessary to mine and how peasants and mine owners form, modify, and break mineral covenants designed to reduce mining risks.
