Publisher's Synopsis

The book, Northern Lights, the Beauty of the Forgotten Scandinavian Enamel Jewelry Artisans, is a compendium, focusing on the late 1800s to the mid-1900s, when enamel art became one of the most prestigious fields of art in Scandinavia. During this time enamel jewelry's value was judged by its beauty and design, independent from the precious metal it was on. In 1904, at the Saint Louis World's Fair, Norway received awards in enameling surpassing their Russian counterparts. Surprisingly, there is limited information available about these winning master Scandinavian artisans. Many faded into oblivion, their histories lost in out of print books or archives. This book highlights details of thirty-eight of these master enamel artisans. Each chapter contains a photograph and brief history of the artisan and his workshop, names and photographs of some who worked for the artesian, a description of the era in which he worked, photographs of pieces representative of his style, and identifies the Maker's mark (stamp) used to sign the pieces.
