Penny Brunel is content; living in North Notting Hill, married to a famous explorer forever away on a polar expedition, working for a P.R. company and generally being an honest and wise person. Sadly, this perfectly cut jigsaw is thrown in to disarray by the untimely appearance of her stepson Terence, who moves into her life making uncomfortable assumptions.
On hearing her husband has fallen through the ice, Penny examines her marriage and life more closely and begins to discover an unsettling truth about herself. Maybe the friends who she thought fabricated their lives, had actually been pretending less than her all along.
