Publisher's Synopsis

This is a book that focuses on the optical trapping and manipulation of new materials, many of them being "non-usual" to the optical trapping community (e. g. semiconductors, topological insulators, conducting polymeric materials, paramagnetic particles, quantum dots and others). The optical properties of these different materials are presented, discussed and correlated to the specific characteristics concerning the optical manipulation of beads made of these materials. To develop these advanced topics, the theory of optical and thermal (photophoretic) forces are presented firstly, preparing the reader. In addition, a chapter dedicated specifically to the theory and instrumentation of optical tweezers is also presented. Finally, applications and perspectives for the near future are also presented and discussed, for example, in single molecule machines, micromotors and microdevides, microrheology, dynamic oscillatory forces on biopolymers, etc.

Key Features:

  • The first book that focuses on the optical trapping and manipulation of various types of different materials
  • Integrated presentation of two specific topics: the optical properties of the different materials and the consequences of such properties on the optical manipulation of such materials
  • Includes cutting edge topics
  • Presents applications and perspectives for the future
